Bridge is a Family (Travel!) Affair

Many SiVY players knew of bridge from an adult player before joining the youth bridge organization. Not so with Lucas – an aspiring player with no family or adult friends who play. Despite the fact that Grace, Lucas’ mom, does not play bridge – she will be accompanying him to Chicago this summer for the Youth North American Bridge Championships (NABC), enjoying some family time with her son and visiting the city for the first time. Lucas is planning to participate in the Youth NABC with the support of the SiVY Youth NABC Sponsorship Program, which offers coaching, camaraderie, and cash in support of attending the Summer tournament.

Lucas found out about SiVY Bridge last year at JLS Middle School in Palo Alto, where there was a thriving after school program. He attends the SiVY Pizza Parties, occasionally comes to Casual Friday, and earned his first masterpoints at the Youth Day at the Firecracker Sectional in 2014.

According to Lucas’ mom, Grace, he’s always enjoyed card games. Even as a small child if the adults were playing cards, he’d want to join in. Grace goes on to say she’s glad that SiVY offered bridge at JLS, as that made it very convenient for him to learn without having to go someplace special to take lessons. Lucas plays other card games besides bridge, poker being a favorite. About bridge, he say his favorite aspect is “It makes me think!”

Besides attending the Youth NABC this summer, Lucas is also planning to attend the SiVY Bridge Summer Camp. Mom Grace says about bridge and her son, “I’m not pushing him to be a champion or anything, I just want him to have fun. Success is being passionate about what you’re doing and trying your best – that’s what I want for Lucas and his bridge game.”
