SiVY Bridge held its first monthly pizza party in May, 2013 and has had 44 more since – roughly one per month. The events were envisioned as a way for young players from a variety of school programs to meet other players – and a way to include youth who learned the game outside SiVY. They’ve been attended by 344 players averaging about 5 parties each. In total over 1700 players have enjoyed pizza, snacks, and bridge play at SiVY events.
Calix Tang, a 9th grader at Homestead High, has attended 29 SiVY parties dating back to Fall, 2013 when he was in 5th grade. He’s made a lot of friends through playing bridge and enjoys seeing them at the monthly pizza parties. Calix also regularly attends Casual Friday, as an additional way to play bridge and socialize. When asked what he likes most about SiVY events, he said, “I like how it integrates fun, competition, and socializing into one event.”
The parties are a simple concept made to look easy through the efforts of a dedicated group of volunteers who’ve perfected the format over time. Sue Griswold, SiVY event chair said, “The pizza parties are a lot of work, but they’re such fun for the young people. The beginners love the attention they get and learn so quickly – and the advancing players enjoy competing in the tournament and winning prizes.”
If you’re interested in helping out at the events, please contact Sue Griswold. If you know a 10-25 year old who’d like to learn bridge, sign them up for our next party! It’s a great way for a young person to find out if the game is for them. And even if they don’t take to the game, they’ll enjoy the pizza ☺.
