A New Youth Bridge Game in Town

Four high school age members of the US Youth National Bridge Team who began their bridge careers as SiVY players have newly formed an organization to bring the game of bridge to the next generation of students through interactive training sessions and inter-school competition. The Youth Bridge Association was created by Arthur Zhou, Michael Hu, Jonathan Yue, and Michael Xu and is offering its first events online starting this month.

According to Arthur, the organization’s President, their goal is to help prospective bridge players learn the game, and help high schoolers get better through online team matches. They are working to get schools with existing bridge clubs to join so that they can start scheduling team matches between schools.

The groups’ first event to introduce new players to bridge is Saturday, 8/8, from 2-3 PM. They are also planning a free, multi-week course for interested players starting on 8/15 from 4-6 PM on Zoom. Students can register for the multi-week class. The course will cover some basic bidding and play techniques, 1 level opening bids and responses, and offer students a chance to play a couple of practice hands to reinforce concepts.

In addition, the YBA’s founders are continuing to mentor the Lynbrook and Leland bridge teams and hoping to sign up additional existing bridge teams for mentorship and practice matches.

When asked why he formed the YBA, Arthur summed it up nicely by saying “I can't imagine what my life would be like if SiVY did not exist and I wasn't introduced to bridge, and I truly believe many more students can benefit from learning bridge.”

Couldn’t agree more…!
