Final Results in 2016 Masterpoint Races

SiVY players were among the top finishers in nearly every point category of the 2016 Mini-McKenney in District 21. And in the District’s Youth race (players age 19 and under), SiVY players dominated, capturing 9 of the top 10 spots and 25 of the top 26!

The top youth player in our District was Kevin Rosenberg who, although not a SiVY youth, is a teacher and mentor for the program. The other 9 top spots went to Michael Hu, Rory Xiao, Cornelius Duffie, Sarah Youngquist, David Zheng, Brent Xiao, Arthur Zhou, Kevin Huang, and Olivia D’Arezzo. 2016 District 21 Youth results.

The SiVY youth were also impressive within their masterpoint categories in the races open to players of all ages. Congratulations to Jonathon Youngquist and Jonathan Yue, 16th and 17th respectively in the 0-5 point group. The 5-20 point race had two finishers in its top group, Sarah Youngquist was 1st and Olivia D’Arezzo was 14th. In the 20-50 point group, Cornelius Duffie was 2nd, David Zheng was 5th, and Arthur Zhou was 7th. Two SiVY youth were in the top finishers in the 50-100 point group: Rory Xiao was 6th and Kevin Huang was 16th. Another impressive finish was Michael Hu, placing 7th in the 200-300 point race.

Special congratulations to the top finisher in the District in the 5-20 point race, Sarah Youngquist. Sarah won this group by earning 103.26 masterpoints during the year – trouncing the 2nd place finisher by more than 40 points!

A junior at Palo Alto High School, Sarah’s points were won by placing in several events at the Summer Nationals, as a member of the winning team of the Bay Area High School Bridge Championships, and by playing in the local club. She and regular partner Cornelius Duffie have also become regulars in local tournaments whenever their busy high school schedules permit.

With 106.61 points for the year, Cornelius was VERY close to winning his group, also – he was edged out by an adult player by less than 4 points.

The McKenney Trophy was established in 1938 to recognize the ACBL member who wins the most masterpoints during a calendar year. The race was renamed the Top 500 in 1982 and the Barry Crane Top 500 in 1986. In 1974 the ACBL Board of Directors voted to recognize masterpoint achievements among players below the rank of Life Master. Thus were born the Mini-McKenney races.
